This is not about the 3 people who walked into the recent White House State Dinner uninvited. oh, there's no possibility that any of them could have been a suicide bomber, we're told -- because they all passed through metal detectors. (never mind that an airline passenger recently cleared airport metal detectors with shotgun shells in his carry-on bag; and, more importantly, never mind that 3 trained assassins could have killed -- with their bare hands, in a matter of seconds -- the President, Vice President, and the Indian high-muckety-muck who was being honored at the dinner. no need for explosives or other fancy weapons!)
No, this is not about any of them. the person in the White House who is acting like a suicide bomber is the President himself.
What are the characteristics of suicide bombers as we know them? they are overwhelmingly self-righteous, absolutely convinced that they are doing the right thing, and unfazed by other points of view. only they (the suicide bombers) know what is best -- not just for themselves, but for everyone -- and they are maniacally determined to achieve their goals, even if the whole world is against them. so much the better, in fact; the more opposition they overcome, the more glory for them! and, of course, the one biggest thing that defines them: they are willing even to commit suicide for the sake of their ideology.
This definition, it seems to me, is proving more and more descriptive of the President as time goes by. in his case, let's hope it's "only" a political suicide ... but, in every other way, the definition seems to fit him like a fine, custom-made shirt.
Are there no soothsayers?
In the days of the ancient Roman Empire, it was customary for the Emperor or someone close to him to assess the likely outcome of potential actions by consulting a soothsayer. now that America is the New Roman Empire -- always conducting a variety of wars (declared, undeclared, semi-declared, or black ops) in far-flung places -- it seems that the new Emperor would have a soothsayer on his staff. but apparently he doesn't -- which is one more confirmation of my suicide-bomber thesis....
A suicide bomber has no need of a soothsayer. the bomber's course is set and locked; he will do everything possible to carry out his mission, no matter what gets in his way. and, naturally, what happens after that is of no concern to him.
